Nimbus

What do you do when a cyclopean robot steals your girl? Embark on a quest to destroy him with fireballs of course. Such is the start of Nimbus, a creatively designed physics-based puzzle game from Noumenon Games. The title requires you to maneuver a small aircraft past deadly dangers through bright and colorful stages to grab keys, unlock doors, and reach the finish line. You're also timed while looping around the stages and ranked on a leaderboard at the end, so in addition to being a puzzle title that requires quick reflexes, it's also a bit of a racing game. Combining elements of a New Super Mario Bros. overworld, a Sonic the Hedgehog style, and frequent Donkey Kong Country barrel blasting, this is an experience that's easily recommended to just about anyone out there.

The core gameplay hinges on maintaining your ship's speed against the stubborn pull of gravity. On a 2D plane your ship will accelerate as it dives with gravity and decelerates as it moves up against it. The consistency and reliability of that relationship helps to make the game's controls and mechanics easy to understand. You have the power to dip the ship's nose up and down to oscillate through the air, using velocity gained on the downward run to coast further forward. Should you lose all altitude, grind into the ground, and come to a halt you effectively die, though a swift restart requires only a keystroke. While the larger stages have checkpoints that afford additional 'lives' depending on difficulty level, most won't take very long to breeze through, making for fast and easy recovery from mistakes. The level of challenge can become frustrating, but never overly so. Regardless of how many times you slam into a spike wall, the challenges never feel unfair or unreasonable, making it easy to burn bundles of hours to reach the end or discover the fastest path through.
